Why Do Two-High Rolling Mills Have Advantages?
The large diameter rolls of a two-high mill can be used for carbon steel wires, stainless steel wires, brass wires, galvanizing lines, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and skin pass mills. In a single pass, soft materials can be reduced from round bar to strip/flat wire with large reductions because the roller size is adjustable. As shown in the photo on the right, a 2-high rolling mill with roll diameter 250mm can be used for skin-passing and reducing soft materials such as lead, high carbon steel wires, steel wires and copper. The downside of 2-high rolling mills is that the rolls have a large diameter, resulting in limited reduction. This is because of the flattening effect of the rolls. When separating pressure occurs on a roll, its actual diameter changes and the area under the roll is greatly reduced.
